A Brave New World

I’ve always been one of the few of my generation to avoid quickly adapting to the influx of technology in our day to day lives. Technology served more as a distraction than a medium. I was the type of writer who wanted to sit at a desk and generate story after story that would no doubt be the next best thing. Over the course of a decade, once I began pursuing writing as a career, that mindset has (very) slowly changed. Now, thanks to my fiancee, Jess, I own a Macbook Pro and an iPhone. I recently started a Twitter account. My next job is to access my Facebook page which I started four or five years ago, checked numerous times a day for a couple months, then never returned to it. Why all this sudden change?

Mainly, I’ve become smarter. Though it does happen, most new writers don’t get published unless they have some sort of web presence. My classes and experience at Wilkes University taught me, when used properly, these outlets can only help, not hurt a writing career. Create Your Writer Platform by Chuck Sambuchino, the nonfiction book I’m currently reading, reinforced those ideas. “Be the rule, not the exception” is the title of one part in the second chapter. “And it’s not my philosophy to urge people to be exceptions, no more than it is  my philosophy to tell you to buy lottery tickets or hit the roulette table if you’re short on cash.”

I’m all for a nice long session at the roulette table, but not when it comes to my future. So, this is my attempt to build my writer platform. Hopefully, I can entertain you for a couple minutes a day or week, however often it ends up that I post. On here, you’ll get a little bit of everything, from what I’m reading or writing about, updates on my writing group, why the Yankees are awesome, why fantasy baseball is the greatest thing in the world and the worst all at the same time. There will also be links to friends and colleagues articles and books. Pretty much anything that happens to cross my mind. Guess that’s the point anyway. Hope you enjoy the ride.
